Digital Motor Hairdryer: How It Works and Why It's Better
As with any technological product, the price range for hair dryers can vary significantly.
But, just like TVs or smartphones, there are elements that justify a higher cost: the Parlux Digitalyon with digital motor is a perfect example. Let's find out why.
AC, DC and Digital Motors: The Differences
Digital motors are not a new thing: they are used today in all industrial sectors where power, durability and savings are required and are generally called “brushless motors”.
However, in the field of hair dryers , models with digital motors can be counted on the fingers of one hand . In these appliances, part of the consumption is in fact linked to the resistance that heats the air and not to the motor itself, which is why manufacturers have always concentrated more on the resistances. Furthermore, mounting a digital motor on a hair dryer that must remain light and ergonomic is not so simple.
In the vast majority of cases, hair dryers use an AC motor. DC (direct current) motors are used for Made in China products, which are not very powerful and have a maximum lifespan of about 300 hours. In both cases, the comparison is a losing one with a hair dryer with a digital motor.
An AC motor, despite its reliability, actually works with brushes, which deteriorate over time, causing the “end” of the hair dryer. A hair dryer with an AC motor lasts from 1500 to 2500 hours , which is relatively few for a hair salon where the hair dryer is a work tool that is used continuously.
The digital motor uses a microprocessor to manage the inversion of the magnetic field and generate energy, without contact and without brushes.

It is also more efficient, thanks to a 17% higher air speed and a 37% increase in pressure (compared to the AC motor), and more economical, because it obviously dries in much less time (around half that of a traditional hairdryer).
